How to Dispose Cat Litter

If you have a cat at home and it is not litter-trained, the easiest thing that you can do is to clean up the litter with the help of a tissue and flush it. But if the cat is trained and poops in the litter box, then it depends on what material the cat box is. In case you make use of sand in the litter box of your cat, then it is advisable not to flush it. Your toilet can get choked up if you keep flushing the cat litter box. Also, the other kind of cat litter boxes that are the clay and clumping cat litter ones can also clog your drainage pipes and be a big headache for you.

In case you make use of crystal litter, the disposal job on your hands gets a bit easy. Since it is made up of silica gel, it absorbs cat urine without clumping and you can flush it in small quantities. Also, much of it does not stick to the feces and you can flush that too. But again, it is not advisable to do so on a regular basis.

Some biodegradable cat litter boxes are made of big pellets which may again clog your drain pipes. There are others which are also made of sawdust or wood which can be flushed without any hassles. But, in case there is a septic tank at your home, then you need to understand that these materials may not degrade soon. It may take years for the degradation to happen and the septic tank may fill up. This may become a greater nuisance for you.

There are some cat litter boxes available in the markets that are flushable cat litter, which are rather convenient. These also cost more than the other cat litters. They make use of several biodegradable materials which can pass through very safely through the plumbing of your house.

The manufacturers claim that these new kind of cat litters do not form sludge and do not clog up the sewage pipes. But some plumbers say that they have seen homes where the drainage pipes and plumbing was choked by these flushable litters. So, it is best not to flush down large amounts of cat litter.

The best way to dispose of the bulk part of the cat litter is to put it together in a bag along with the rest of the trash of the house or you can also bury it somewhere in your garden in a careful way. Rather in your garden, the cat urine and feces will act as goos manure for your plants. In since the cat excreta contain some dangerous bacteria for vegetable plants and fruit trees, it is not advisable to fertilize them with it.

There is no doubt that to safely flush cat litter is the best thing any day and also the most convenient option on the days when it is raining or snowing. Flushable cat litter would really simplify the disposal of cat litter.
